My husband likes to fish, and that hobby turns into the blessing of a freezer full of fish. The boys and I eat a lot of fish for lunch. Normally I’ll just poach or broil it, but sometimes I like to change it up and make these Walleye Cakes.

This walleye fishcake recipe is perfect for those following Trim Healthy Mama, as you can choose whether you want to make it for a S meal or an E meal. It also is approved for those following GAPS, Whole30, or the Paleo diet.
Walleye Cakes are easy to throw together and you can use the basic recipe and then throw in different seasonings every time for a different flavor.
Walleye Cakes {Trim Healthy Mama S or E, GAPS, Whole 30, Paleo}
2 cups flaked fish, cooked and deboned
1 egg {use 2 egg whites for a THM E meal}
ΒΌ c coconut flour
1 T Italian Seasoning
Salt and Pepper
Optional: chopped onion, minced garlic, chopped spinach.
Coconut oil or Avocado oil to cook in. {Use the coconut cooking spray from Trader Joe’s for an E meal.}
Mix all the ingredients together until well combined. You want to make sure that you don’t have any coconut flour clumps in your walleye cakes. Use a quarter cup measuring cup to portion your walleye cakes. {I prefer cooking these in avocado oil, which has a higher smoke point 520* versus 350* for coconut oil.} Cook in oil on medium heat for one to two minutes, then flip and continue cooking for another one to two minutes.
We usually serve these with steamed or roasted veggies. Sometimes a potato of some sort. These also make great snacks for later in the day. Grab a walleye cake out of the fridge with some celery or carrot sticks, yum!!
For THM ladies, you can serve this with a sweet potato, beans, or other carb combination to make an E meal. If you want to stay in S territory but want a “potato” dish, use mashed cauliflower.
If you are following GAPS, these are allowed starting in Stage 3.

Okay, I don’t normally like fish, but these look pretty darn amazing. I have to try them out. Do they taste “fishy?”
Rebekah says
Hey Divya, good question! Walleye isn’t a very “fishy” fish, so no, these don’t. But if you use a fishier kind of fish, these fish cakes may take on a different flavor. You could always add more spices too, that might mask the flavor.

I don’t follow any of those plans, but the meal still sounds good!!

They are delicious!! And, no, you don’t need to follow these plans to eat them!! Thanks for coming by, Danielle!! π

It is a big lifestyle change, isn’t it!! We aren’t completely grain free, but we do limit grains here, at least my boys and I do, hubby could care less, haha!! π Hope you enjoy!

I just bought some coconut flour and am wanting to try this! Wow!

I love coconut flour because it is one of the least expensive grain free flour options, if you buy in bulk anyways. I hope that you like these!! I also have a coconut flour waffle recipe that is super yummy!
