Using the Power of Play to Unlock Learning

It’s summertime. School might be out for your little ones or, like us, you may be schooling through the year. I was really excited when I was given the opportunity to review this book from some fellow blogging mommas, because it is all about learning through play. When I saw the title of the book, The Undeniable Power of Play: 101 Tips, Activities and Play-Based Learning Strategies to Engage Your Child, I immediately thought that it would be perfect for summer learning. Seth will be going into 1st grade in the fall and while we follow a schedule similar to this during the school year I want to continue schooling through the summer with him, even if we are only doing something two days a week, to keep him in a routine so that our new school routine isn’t a tremendous shock to his system in September.
Using the Power of Play in Your Homeschool Day
As a homeschooling momma I get excited when playtime turns into new learning opportunities. {Check out our Spring and Fall Scavenger hunts, both have free printables!} The two things that I love most about this book are that it is centered around learning through play and it uses items that almost everyone has around their house. {Their were a few things we didn’t have but overall we had the majority of the things needed to make/play these fun games.} While I want Seth and Cameron to continue learning through the summer, I also don’t want them to realize that I am trying to sit them down and teach them something, I want them to realize that they are learning new concepts on their own. The Undeniable Power of Play makes it possible to achieve that goal. Through each game, project, and craft presented in the book your child will learn and absorb things while playing and having fun. They aren’t sitting in one spot for long periods of time, unless they want to, they aren’t filling in answers, or adding up addition problems, but they will learn about chemistry, biology, color recognition, pattern recognition, and a whole lot more.
The boys tried a couple of activities from the book, Pick a Pattern and Lacing it Up. Cameron (3) was really more interested in these activities than Seth (5) was, but they both did have fun. Seth liked making his own patterns with different coins and Cameron made patterns with our magnetic letters. {Here are more fun activities to do with magnetic letters.}
We are trying to reduce our screen time this summer and this book steps in to fill that time with fun learning activities. I know that we will be using more activities from The Undeniable Power of Play as the summer days slip by.

The power of play is undeniably the best way for kids to learn. I love to see what they do with pencils when I am not looking or cooking lunch. The other day my middle child built a tower with crayons instead of coloring…that was ok. The tower was cool. Thanks for linking to Talk It Up Thursday.

My 5 year old actually loves worksheets, so I have been printing quite a few of them for him to do this summer. We like to incorporate learning into play for him and my 2 year old as well. We talk about colors and shapes of the toys as they are playing. We also like to have fun while they are outdoors, having them count flowers or number of steps somewhere.

There are so many day by day moments that can be used for learning if I learn to set down my phone or put down my book and engage with my littles! Thanks for coming by Ellie!
