We recently went on vacation to the deep south.
Farther south than I had ever been before.
It was HOT. ๐
But we were right by the ocean. ๐
We picked Ben up early from work on Friday May 29th and after a quick stop at Best Buy to grab a couple DVD’s and a adapter for the laptop so the boys could watch some movies. Best idea ever!!! We drove until around 2 Saturday morning and then checked into a hotel in Knoxville, TN for a couple hours of sleep.
We loved the mountains in TN and NC. The boys would say “aaaaahhhhh” all the way down with little breaks to ask if the downhill part was over yet. ๐
We met up with my brother, sister-in-law and nephew in SC. Spent the rest of Saturday and part of Sunday with them before heading to our campsite on Tybee Island.
We stayed at River’s End Campground on Tybee Island. I have to say it was nothing like the campsites I am used to here in MI and the price was higher than I was expecting but we were super close to both the Savannah River Beach and the Atlantic Ocean Beach of Tybee Island.
The boys loved being outside all day everyday. Our campsite was basically a sand pit, perfect for lots of digging. Showers were mandatory every night because they were so covered in dirt by the end of the day. That picture ^up there^ of them eating, that was after going to the beach and “washing” in the ocean.
We visited the Oatland Island Wildlife Centerwhile we were on Tybee Island. It was awesome! Highly recommend it if you head that way. First, for four of us it was $13 total. Second, we got to see lots of animals in more natural environment than at a zoo. Third, it was a cheap outing that kept us out of the sun for a few hours.
We walked the second half pretty quickly because there was a storm coming in but were still able to check out the wolves and buffalo. Seth and Cameron liked the baby alligator in the gift shop a lot but I think their favorite animals were the buffalo.
It did rain one night so we played cards in the tent, ate at Wiley’s Championship BBQ and then watched a movie in the tent.
We met up with my sister-in-law and nephew C one day while on Tybee Island. This time we went to the other end of the island to use the pier for shade.
C is such a little man. He loved to eat sand, ignore the camera and he told some great stories. ๐ My favoritist nephew he is. {I only have one nephew right now, so don’t worry about obvious favoritism yet…:p}
Another day we drove down to Brunswick, GA and met up with my good friend Amber– who used to live up by us in West MI before moving to Africa for a year, back to MI and then down to Florida all within two years. We hadn’t seen her in a while and it was so much fun seeing the kids play together.
Seth and Isaiah have birthdays just a few days apart. They took a nap together on the beach. ๐
On our last day on Tybee Island we went shell searching. Ben and Seth have a great idea for all their treasures that they found.
Then for our final couple of days we rented an apartment in Savannah, GA and hung out with my sister and brother-in-law and my brother and his family. We walked a lot, down River Street, through a beautiful cathedral and had a good time being together.
Sunday June 7th we left at 5:30AM to get Ben home for work Monday morning. It was an 18 hour trip. It went really well thanks to boys exhausted from all the excitement and lots of prayers for
patience.
It was our first family vacation longer than a couple days for four years. Definitely needed and enjoyed.
This video is Seth’s view on BabyT#3, camping and the ocean. ๐
Have you had a family vacation this year? Do you have something planned for the summer?
Amber says
It was so great meeting up with you!! I am so glad you let me know you guys would be down this way. =) Hopefully we will be back up to Michigan soon!!!! We miss you guys!
Rebekah says
Yes! And then you can come see our house with siding. ๐
Valerie says
Haha, it sure IS hot here!! BLAH ๐
We were actually talking about visiting Brunswick and staying in Jekyll Island this summer but then moving to a new home happened so our vacationing plans are being held off until next year. ๐ I’m glad you had such a good time! Great pics ๐
Rebekah says
The heat did do one good thing and that was helping us to acclimate to what our eventual summer weather will be here. We haven’t felt hot yet. ๐
We had dinner on St something Island. I think it wasn’t to far from Jekyll Island.
Valerie says
Yes! St Simons Island – I’ve been there! Beautiful!! ๐
Nicole Keener says
It sounds and looks like you all had a wonderful time! I’m in Florida and trust me HOT doesn’t even explain the heat we are feeling right now.
Rebekah says
We did! I’m so glad we have been having a cooler than normal summer here is MI. Normally I love the heat, but while pregnant it can be miserable!
