One of the biggest things that I learned when we were doing our elimination diet with Seth earlier this year was how many places grain hides. I found it in spices, lunch meat, chips, powdered drink mixes, some body care products, and more.
In the first few things on the above list the offender is corn. Corn syrup, maltodextrin and dextrose. Even xanthan gum can be derived from corn. (I did use xanthan gum during our grain-free months, but I didn’t use it often.)
I also found it in baking powder. Another place I was not expecting to find grain.
Baking Soda and Apple Cider Vinegar are a good substitute for baking powder, but they don’t work the best in everything, so I decided we needed to make our own.
Grain-free Baking Powder is really simple and quick to make. You only need three ingredients. Baking Soda, Arrowroot Powder and Cream of Tartar.
To make it you add one part baking soda, one part arrowroot powder and two parts cream of tartar.
Here are the exact measurements I used to make a cute little half-pint jar:
Grain-Free Baking Powder
*6 Tablespoons Cream of Tartar
*3 Tablespoons Baking Soda
*3 Tablespoons Arrowroot Powder
Place all ingredients in a bowl and whisk together until there are no clumps. Place in an airtight container. Use in any recipe that calls for baking powder.
It is so easy to make your own grain-free baking powder. If you try it let me know how you think it works!

I had no clue that was possible!

Neither did I. So glad we were able to find replacements for our baking items when we went grain free.

This sounds fun to make and use. I am not familiar with arrowroot powder. Where do you find it?
Rebekah says
You could find it in a health food store or in the gluten free/baking section at Meijer and Walmart.
Most grocery stores that I have been at carry it. Good luck on your search! ๐

Oh, wow! I had no idea baking powder had grain in it, or that you could make a substitute. I am sharing this in a natural group I’m part of where a lot of them are grain free.

That is interesting! I didn’t know you could make your own baking powder like that! I have a few friends that have been having to eliminate more and more grains form their diet, I’ll have to pass this on to them!
