Looking for a fall scavenger hunt for toddlers? Here is a simple one plus a free printable!
Have fun while getting outside
If you have been here for a while you may remember our Walks to Daddy. We don’t do it as often as we used to but we still try to get out at least once a week and make our way to Ben. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, here is a quick explanation:
About 45 minutes before Ben gets homeΒ {that’s how long it takes for him to get home, sometimes he calls when he leaves other times I just guess at the approximate time he left}Β the boys and I do a 15-20 minute clean up session. We pick up toys, try to clear the table, straighten things in the bedrooms and bathroom, etc. Then we head outside for our walk. We will walk up and down our road and sometimes on some of the other roads until Ben meets us and picks us up.Β {The other day Ben told me I had taught the boys a bad habit, I have the boys stick out their thumbs like hitch hikers when they see Ben’s vehicle, evidentally while we were camping with friends Cameron was trying to get a ride somewhere because every car that was passing our site was getting a thumbs up sign. :-)}Β Then the boys will ride home with Ben and I’ll walk. Sometimes I ride too, but most times it is a nice break. π
Anyways this fall I wanted to create something that would help us pass the time if I’m bad on my estimate, or Ben gets stuck in traffic, and thatwill help the boys to learn more about the fall season. While Cameron might be too little to retain a lot of the knowledge I still like the fact that he will be learning something. Toddlers have great memory and learning capacity that we tend to forget about.
And while I love our Kindergarten curriculum from Horizon’s, I’ve always loved the idea behind unit studies. Actually I pretty much did every High School subject through unit studies and I love how they incorporate different areas of study behind one topic.

It is! I love watching how excited they get when we don’t go on a walk; Yelling and running to the door… it makes my heart melt. π

Oh I love this! Fall is my favorite time of year. It’s really great to go out for walks and check out what we see in nature. Just the other day my son and I were having a great time collecting acorns. I’m definitely going to print out your scavenger hunt to play with him. Thanks!
Rebekah says
I hope you guys have fun Tricia! I’ve been waiting for my oldest to bring in a collection of acorns but he hasn’t yet…he might be a hoarder in the making though so I won’t be surprised when he does bring in pocketfuls of acorns. π

This is a FABULOUS idea! We also do a quick clean up of toys before daddy gets home but I would LOVE to start doing the walks like you. Too bad he doesn’t have the commute like yours. He is 5 minutes from home…lol!! <3 Christine, The Choosy Mommy, http://www.choosykids.blogspot.com

Lol! Asking him to switch jobs probably wouldn’t be a good idea. π I would love it if my hubby worked closer to home but at least he gets a chance to decompress on the way home.
Maybe you could start a weekly walk as a family. That would be fun too! π

We just did a fall scavenger hunt last week. We used paper bags to collect the items on the list. We also like to use stickers to mark off the items we find to make it easier for the little ones. I can’t wait until our leaves start changing colors – more things to find!
Rebekah says
I love the sticker idea!! My two year old is all about stickers right now, so he would have a blast with that! We’re just starting to get temps that will encourage our leaves to change and I’m so excited! Fall is my favorite season!

I’m totally going to have fun with this! Fall is in full bloom here in Alaska, everything is painted red, yellow, and orange! It’s beautiful! We’re doing unit studies too and we’ve already collected some leave samples, but I totally feel that a nature hike is in order!
Rebekah says
Let me know when you use it!! π I can’t wait until our trees start turning colors, it should happen sometime in the next couple of weeks.

What a fun idea! I think all of my children will enjoy this project. I think you can even expand this to include birds that might be migrating, insects, and observing what other animals, such as squirrels, might be doing during the fall season. I love using Unite Studies with my kids. SO fun!!
Rebekah says
There are so many things you could include! I’m not the best with graphics and I couldn’t figure out how to get more on the sheet. π
