DVD Series We Use As We Homeschool
One of the biggest things that I love about homeschooling is being able to pull in different topics into our core subjects. To supplement the core subjects that I have chosen for elementary grades- reading, writing, and math- I like to pull out DVDS, YouTube videos, and audio books. It takes the pressure off of me as the teacher, and my kids get super excited to watch a show for school. ๐ Here are some DVD series for homeschooling supplementation.

The Nature of God
I originally picked this series up at a homeschool convention because I wanted something educational to entertain the boys during rest time or when I needed a quiet moment. I was pleasantly with the great science in this show and how it uses nature to point us back to God. Like Paul says in Romans: “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” {Romans 1:19-20, ESV}
We have the Great Lakes Discoveries set which has been really exciting for my boys because they can then go out into our backyard and find many to the things that they have learned about in the lessons. There are also series that focus on Ocean Life, Hawaii, and Wilderness.
Little Image Bearers
We recently received the first season of Little Image Bearers from my friends Abbey and Caleb of Little Image Bearers and LOVED it! It is reminiscent of Mr. Rogers but shares a Christian message, reminding children that all are created in the image of God and we all have unique gifts and purposes. Teaching my children that it doesn’t matter our skin color or ethnicity, we are all an image bearer of Christ and were all made to bring him glory is something that I am really trying to stress throughout our recent discussions. This creative children’s series goes along so well with that.
We’ve also loved the crafts that are shown in each show, in fact after one episode my older two spent thirty minutes creating their own puppets just like Mr. Caleb’s. And the music is great, it isn’t annoying and we’ve actually let the credits run for a while just so we can have the music playing.
The Story Keepers
This series was one of my favorites when I was little. We checked out the videos from our church library, I think. I was really excited when we started studying Rome in Story of the World and we could order them to borrow through our local library. The Story Keepers series shows children what life was like when Nero was emperor of Rome and the young church was facing tremendous persecution, while also sharing different parables and teachings of Jesus. Adventures like sneaking into the palace to rescue a friend, or riding down the aquaducts to escape capture, were then translated into our own play on summer afternoons.
Liberty Kids
Another series that I loved growing up, though we had to see if we could catch it on TV when we went to my grandma’s house. I don’t really like the theme song to this series because it talks about obeying what your heart tells you to do, but I do love the history of it. I have always felt a great responsibility to teach my children how and why their country was founded, but never before have I felt it like I do now in the era of COVID19. As I watch the response to this virus, I pray that there will be leaders raised up who are willing to take a stand, much like the founding Fathers did.
Liberty Kids tells the story of the birth pains of the United States from the viewpoints of three different young people. In it, you are introduced to many of the founding fathers and other historical figures.
Leap Frog
All of my children will watch the dvd series mentioned above, but this choice is usually only watched by my preschooler and toddler. The preschooler picks one of the three Leap Frog dvds we have once or twice a week for his school time show. Letters, numbers, phonics rules, days of the week, and more all taught through fun songs.
I’m sure we will collect more DVD series that we really like as we go further on our homeschooling journey, so the list may change in the future, but what dvd series do you really like to supplement your homeschool curriculum?
