Cloth Diapering in Cold Weather + What’s in My CD Stash
One of the search terms that brings the most traffic to this blog is cloth diapers in cold weather or other variations of the words cloth, diaper, cold, weather and winter.

If you searched with those terms before you were sent to this post which really has nothing to do with cloth diapering your baby in the winter.
I will now attempt to answer questions you may have about cloth diapering in cold weather months and then share what I have in my cloth diaper stash.
What You Should Know About Cloth Diapering in Cold Weather Months
Will using cloth diapers on my baby during the winter months make her prone to chapped cheekies?
(This was an actual question I found on some board somewhere in internet land, sorry I didn’t save the link because I thought I would find more questions.)
No. Cloth diapers will NOT make her prone to chapped cheekies. And if you are worried about diaper rashes, most CD’ing mommas will tell you they have less occurrences of diaper rashes using cloth diapers than they did while using disposable.
If your little one does get a diaper rash coconut oil is a nice natural way to soothe that little tush. Breastmilk, lanolin or olive oil are also good choices. All mentioned will wash right out of your diapers when you use hot water.
How do I wash and dry my cloth diapers in the winter?
You can wash them the same way you do in the warmer months. I usually do a rinse cycle, then a hot water wash with a CD friendly detergent and another cold rinse. Dry the liners in the dryer and hang the diapers anywhere you can in the house. A drying rack would be nice. We already broke one at our house so I just drape them over the edge of the laundry baskets over the back of the laundry couch. (Yes I have a designated couch for laundry.:) )
If you don’t mind freeze dried diapers and frostbitten fingers you could dry the diapers on the line and then toss in the dryer just for a couple of minutes to soften.
Will my baby’s cloth diaper affect their carseat belt effectiveness?
No. But during these cold weather months when we want to cover every inch of skin that we see, especially our baby’s, it is important that we dress the top of them properly for every car ride out. Those big puffy coats that you see everywhere ARE NOT SAFE for littles in five point harnesses. Those coats compress in an accident and your child can then slip out of the harness and be greatly injured. Slim fitting fleece lined sweatshirts are a great option. Save those puffy coats for play in the snow.
I’ll get off my soapbox now to restate that your cloth diapers are perfectly safe in your carseat and will not affect the effectiveness of the harness.
So hopefully that answered your questions about cloth diapering in cold weather. Now on to…
What I Have In My Diaper Stash
*5 fitted covers
*12 cotton flats- I use these as inserts
*11 prefolds- I use as inserts
*15 pocket diapers- most are the Kawaii brand, I love them!!!
*4 real inserts- each is a different kind
My Kawaii pocket diapers have been used almost daily from October 2012-November 2014. {Cameron started potty training the middle of November and now we get to wash lots of undies instead of diapers. :)} I have had to reseal them a couple of times but they have definitely held up better than I was expecting for the cheap brand.
Where Do I Get My Diapers?
I get most of my diapers from Sweetbottoms Baby Boutique. The link for that awesome US based store is above. Some covers I get off Amazon.

I’m well past the diapering years.
But, enjoy every moment with your babies-you’ll turn around and they’ll be asking for the keys to your car π
Blessings!

Oh my!! I’m sure that day wil be here soon. π

Thank you for your soapbox about car seat safety…so important! It annoys me that stores sell those puffy coats with buckle holes making people think they should be used in car seats…still not safe! Another thing worth noting is that all those super cute “make your car seat adorable” diy covers and stuff on pinterest could also contribute to the weakening of car seat safety as well as void your car seat warranty! π
Great post! I personally do not cloth diaper but I admire women who do. You go mama! π
Rebekah says
Thanks Kayleigh!! I didn’t realize carseat covers could void the carseat warrenty, I’ll have to check that out. π

We are all about cloth diapering in this house! Love it. But I am hoping that my daughter will potty train soon.

What kind of diapers do you use Tamara?
Rachel Osborn says
What do you mean about resealing them? I got a dozen Bumgenius diapers for free from someone who said they need new elastic…sounds like so much work. Wondering if resealing is any easier. π
Rebekah says
so what I mean about the diapers resealing is that the heat from the dryer can help any plastic that is starting to separate from the liner to re-adhere to the liner so they are waterproof again. Otherwise the diaper can start to leak through holes in the plastic that has separated. Does that make sense?
Where do your diapers need the elastic replaced?
Rachel Osborn says
They need them in the legs apparently because they leaked. I’ve watched tutorials and am wondering if I can just tie a knot in the existing elastic (or fold and stitch a bit) to shorten it up instead of replacing it all right away…it still has a little give. And yes that makes sense about the plastic…but do they all have plastic? Mine seem to be all cloth…
Rebekah says
Hmm, I have no idea about the leg elastic…but they should all have some sort of waterproofing plastic. if these are aio then you won’t be able to see it because it is right next to the outer layer of material. if they are pockets you should see the back of the PUL in the pocket area, the plastic on the back on that is what I am referring to.
