We have just started thawing out, here in Michigan. Our yard is still covered by a good foot and a half of snow, but we can see dirt in our driveway. Yesterday we walked to get the mail and Seth wanted to dig in the small amount of dirt he seen,he was rather shocked at how cold it still was.
See that brown line, it is dirt!! Dirt, how we love you!!”
The sad part is sometime in the next couple of days we get another snowstorm coming in. ๐ It better not last too long!
Another sad thing about weather changes is how we always seem to get sick. Seth and I both caught a cold over the weekend which ended up keeping us home from church and in all day Monday.
After a few good days of rest, lots of Vitamin C and rest, I think we are on the mend.
I made this “Cheesey” Sausage and Broccoli Soup for lunch, hoping the warmth would feel good on sore throats. It did the trick. Seth told me that “it feels good on my throat, ’cause you didn’t put any hurty stuff in it”. ๐
Now, normally when you have a cold you want to avoid dairy products because they can make you have more mucous and phlegm, don’t worry, this soup is dairy free so you won’t have those side effects. A comfort food with good benefits, thanks to the cheesey tasting goodness of nutritional yeast.
Nutritional yeast is a deactivated yeast that is grown on beet sugar or molasses. After it is grown it is deactivated, washed, dried and powdered. It is full of B vitamins, protiens and has all eighteen amino acids. You can read more about it here and here.
“Cheesey” Sausage and Broccoli Soup
Quarter of an onion, chopped
Three small potatoes, cubed, they don’t have to be peeled
Two small carrots, died
Place vegi’s in small pan and cover with water. Bring to a boil and then simmer until soft.
Once the vegi’s are soft, put everything, this includes the water, into a blender. Add:
Salt
Garlic powder
One tablespoon lemon juice or apple cider vinegar
Pepper
Heaping quarter cup nutritional yeast
Blend on high until creamy. Taste and add salt, pepper or more garlic powder as needed.
Saute one head of chopped broccoli and half a pound of sausage. Or you could brown the meat and steam or boil the broccoli. Or use leftover broccoli. You just want it cooked.
After sausage is browned, and broccoli is cooked to your satisfaction, combine it and the creamy cheese sauce in your blender in a soup pan. Place on medium-high heat and allow to heat through. It won’t take that long since everything is warm already.
After heating divide between four bowls and serve.
*If you find the soup to thick for your liking you could always add some water or broth to thin it.
What is your favorite comfort food?
I love soup, it just depends on my mood on the kind. My favorite’s would be Cheesey Broccoli Soup , Chicken Rice Soup and Split Pea Soup.
How about your favorite cold remedy?
We do extra Vitamin C and D here. I like to think it helps us recover quicker. I also try to push lots of fluids, water, soup, broth, etc.

All you had to do was say cheese and it sounded good to me. I just might have to try this. Thanks for posting this one!
If you do try it, I hope you like it!
Ahhh, that looks so good! My family loves brocolli, so I know this would be a big hit! I’ll have to try this. My favorite comfort food is red ebans and rice. As far as the cold remedy, I’ll cook foods with fresh garlic and I also consume lots of fresh pineapple.
Oohh, beans and rice is yummy!! I like them with lots of cumin and cilantro. How do you make yours?
We love broccoli as well, we usually eat it roasted so this soup is a good change of pace for us. ๐
Garlic and pineapple are good ones! I like garlic capsules because then I don’t have garlic breath all day and the sinus pill I am taking right now has bromilan (sp) in it, which I think pineapple has a lot of, besides the Vit C . It is also supposed o be good for the digestive system.
Yummy!! Luckily my boys love both sausage and broccoli!! I do hope the cold weather finally goes away in your neck of the woods!
I really would like some warm weather here soon!! It made it to forty today but our driveway is a sheet of ice, so we can’t go outside yet. Hopefully the ice will melt in the next couple of weeks.
Happy you are feeling better and I hope you thaw out soon!!
Thanks!! I just watched the weather this morning and it is predicting cold for a while, 28ยฐ on the 23rd of March!!! I really hope that changes!
Man, I used to eat nutritional yeast on popcorn when I was breastfeeding. Yummy! This sounds souper! Ha! Seriously, It sounds delicious- you’ve inspired me!
If you take the creamy stuff it also makes good mac and cheese I’ve heard. We have made cheesey potatoes with the cheese base as well. Yum!!
I have heard the nutritional yeast is supposed to help boost milk supply, but that hasn’t happened for me so far.
I did the yeast, the tea, and other stuff and none of it helped us. I was a low producer. I sure tried hard though!
I WILL be trying this!! Thank you for sharing!!!
๐ I hope you like it Amy!!!
You had me at soup! I love soup and this is different and sound great! Thank you for sharing!
You’re welcome! I love soup as well, I always love it when fall comes around and it is time to start soup season. Today I am ready for soup season to be done. ๐
that soup looks delicious., We tried nutritional yeast when my daughters had to be dairy free.
We also use vitamin C when we are sick and we are probiotics.
What did you think of nutritional yeast? How long were your daughters dairy free?
I have never bitten the bullet in terms of no dairy ever. I really need to cause I clearly have an issue with it. I am going to def try that yeast stuff and see if I can survive lol.
If you do go dairy free, another good tasting cheese option is Daiya. They have cheese shreds, cheese slices, cream cheese and sour cream.
More snow is on the way? I am refusing to look at the forecast these days! Don’t want to be depressed. =) Comfort food for me is a salad! I know, sounds weird, but I LOVE salad! =)
The snow missed us here except for a few misguided flakes. Yay!!
I am ready for Salads and summer foods. Fresh vegi’s….
Of course this had to be the first post I read yesterday.. I was craving Panera broccoli and cheese soup allllllllllllllll day long! I’ve finally got caught by the notorious winter cold..I dodged that bad boy almost all winter, but thanks to my husband sneezing in my car in an unprotected manner, he let the nasty into my closed container on wheels and I was cornered, nowhere to go.. down for the count! Well, this looks amazing and easy.. and yummy!! We grow lots of broccoli in the summer so I always have some in the freezer… oooh, ahhhh, yummm. Nutritional yeast?!! never heard of it.. must get some!! sounds wonderful! love the health benefits of this new for me ingredient!! thanks for the great recipe!!
Well it sounds like your husband is just sharing like his momma taught him. ๐
I have never had good luck with broccoli, but I’m pretty sure that is because our soil is really depleted. We ar actually going to garden elsewhere for a few years and let our ground have some time off and get some good nutrients back into it.
I love nutritional yeast on roasted and stir fried vegi’s. Sauteed cabbage is yummy with a sprinkle as well.
Hope you like the soup Kim!
This looks absolutely yummy! and my kids love broccoli, thank God! It seems you guys are experiencing winter for too long now. The snow looks lovely from my view, maybe because I don’t know how cold it can get. Take care!
Yes, winter from November to the end of March is getting crazy to say the least.
I love it when I hear of other kids who love their vegi’s!! Good for you momma!
