This year I have made it a goal to memorize 1 Peter 3-5, for the past three years now I’ve been working on the whole book, but I can’t seem to get past chapter 3. So, this year I decided to start with 1 Peter 3 and work through the end of the book, with the hope of putting the whole book together at the end of the year. Scripture memorization can be hard for busy mommas, so I’ve put together this list of scripture memorization strategies to help us all out.
Break it up.
Separate your passage into small sections, one to two verses, a short paragraph, etc. Just like goal setting, breaking your scripture memorization passage into smaller sections makes it easier to meet your end goal.
I’m working through 1 Peter 3 and the sections that I have personally divided the chapter into are as follows:
*1 Peter 3:1-4
*1 Peter 3:5-6
*1 Peter 3:7
*1 Peter 3:8-9
*1 Peter 3:10-12
*1 Peter 3:13-17
*1 Peter 3:18-20
*1 Peter 3:21-22
Concentrate on one small section at a time, then combine them slowly until you are able to complete the whole chapter or passage.
Write it out.
This second strategy is one that I learned in high school, when I was trying to remember terminology for biology and chemistry I realized that I retained the information better when I wrote the definitions out. There are now numerous articles and studies that show that writing things out helps you to remember them better than simply reading like this about how writing affects the brain and this one.
Sometimes when I am writing the scripture passage I also get rid of words and use symbols. I find that the thinking of a symbol to represent a word also helps me to remember the section better.
Pray it.
Prayer is a powerful thing, and while it may seem like a weird strategy to have on this list, it works amazingly well. Obviously, it isn’t going to make sense to use every passage of scripture as a prayer, but even if you aren’t following the passage word for word, you can still use it as a general outline to direct your thoughts.
You can pray the scripture over yourself, or over others. Here is an example of praying the scripture using 1 Peter 3:1-6:
Father,
Help me today, to be understanding and submissive in my actions with my husband. Help me to live out the gospel in my actions, so that my husband can see your love in me. Help my actions to draw him closer to you. Please help me to have a respectful attitude and tone of voice when speaking with him.
Help me to remember that outer beauty isn’t what you care about. I can be the most beautiful person in the world, but if my actions aren’t showing your love and grace than I don’t look beautiful at all. The beauty that You love and hold most dear, is when I lay down myself and allow you to shine through me. Fill me with a gentle and quiet spirit, one that honors you. Help me to be a mirror image of you. Thank you for giving me examples of women who followed you, trusted you, and gave up all for you.
Father, help me not to fear the things of this world. Draw me closer to you, and in doing so, help me to draw my husband closer to you as well.
Amen.
Put yourself into the scripture.
Inserting your name directly into the verses that you are memorizing is the fourth strategy that you can use to help you memorize scripture passages. You may have heard this done before with John 3:16 or 1 Corinthians 13, and the concept is the same. You simply insert your name into the passage where applicable. For example, here is 1 Peter 3:13-17 inserting my name:
Now who is there to harm you, Rebekah, if you are zealous for what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, Rebekah, you will be blessed. Rebekah, have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your heart honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for the reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that when you, Rebekah, are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer doing good, Rebekah, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil.
Have it Everywhere.
This strategy is one that I used to be good at, but I haven’t done in a while. While you are working on a certain passage of scripture put that passage everywhere that you can see it. Use the second strategy and write out your passage onto note cards or pretty paper, then place it over your kitchen sink, on your bathroom mirror, the bedside table, in a frame on your wall, etc. A place in every room in your house would be amazing! Using this strategy for scripture memorization means that you can never escape God’s Word.
Have an Accountability Partner
This isn’t a strategy that I have used before, but I know that this would definitely urge me on in scripture memorization if I had a partner that was memorizing the passage with me, or checking in on me every week or so. You can ask your husband, your oldest child, your best friend, someone from your Bible study group, whoever you think would encourage you in your endeavor to memorize the Word, and who will be comfortable with putting some pressure on you when you aren’t sticking to the plan.
I hope that as a busy momma you can find these strategies easy to implement, and that you are able to use them to help you in your Scripture memorization goals.

What passages are you working on right now? I’ve been loving helping my boys with their Awana verses, because I get to learn/relearn a lot of verses with them. 🙂

Great ideas! I love the ideas of praying the scripture we are memorizing! After all, the whole purpose of memorizing is to be able to draw on it when it’s needed so we can use it!

I love this. I never have a lot of time to sit down and study God’s Word, but I always love to be able to have those passages in my mind for when I really need them.

Scripture does come, just when I seem to need it. Most of the time, it is just small little verses and reminders, but I think the more I can memorize, the more that will come back to me later. 🙂 Thanks for coming over, Joanna!

I like the idea of putting ourselves in the scripture. It makes it more personal and I can see how it’ll “stick” in our memory bank better.

This is one of the best ways that I have found to memorize scripture!!

I always wrote extensive notes during lectures in college and then rewrote them as part of my studying process. It definitely helps me remember things better! I’ve never memorized Scripture but these are good tips for just making time to actually read and dig deeper into Scripture, too! Thank you for the inspiration to make it a priority again!

Writing things down is such a good tool for me!! I need to get at memorization again. I’m hoping once we get back into our school year routine I can add that back to my list. 🙂
