In the last few Bumpdates that I have shared you may have noticed thatย I have talked a little bit about the Trim Healthy Mama book. I’ve shared some of the main points of the plan with you but since I am choosing the next week to eating 100% on plan I thought that I would share a better overview and show you {myself really} how easy this plan is to implement in your daily life.
I have the only version of the Trim Healthy Mama book that is out now. It is a little more expensive but it has all the details on the plan, recipes and a ton of great information about hormones, exercising, using the plan during pregnancy and more. Coming in September you can get two new paperback editions- a smaller, more affordable version that is information on the plan only OR a Trim Healthy Mama cookbook that is separate from the plan overview.
The premise of the Trim Healthy Mama eating plan is that by eliminating all refined sugars, including honey and maple syrup, and by separating the foods that you eat into two main catagories- 1)slow burning carbohydrates or 2)healthy fats- you will burn through your fuel sources without storing the other, revving your metabolism and burning through fat stores.
Here is the most basic overview of the plan:
*eliminate white products- sugar, artificial sweeteners, white potatoes, white flour, white rice, etc
*separate your fuel sources- if you are eating slow burning carbs use less than two teaspoons of fat for the whole meal, if you are eating healthy fats keep your carbs to less than 10grams of carbs {counting those from higher glycemic fruit and veggies}
*keep protein at the center of your meals
*eat every 3-4 hours during the day
*load up on veggies in their respective catagories- there are certain ones that need to be kept for carb meals and ones that you can use whenever
*replace sugar with stevia if trying to lose weight and coconut sugar or small amounts of honey or maple syrup if at goal weight
Gwen’s Nest has a great quick start guide if you want more information.
If you are following the GAPS diet Amanda from Counting All Joy has amazing meal plans for you!
What I like about the THM plan:
*the only specialty items I buy are stevia and protein powder.
*this is a plan that I can follow all my life becuase it makes complete sense- if I need to lose weight I stick with mostly satisfying fat meals (S) and energizing carb meal (E), if I am super active like marathon training or in the middle of a summer full of cycling I combine the two sources to make Crossovers and add more honey and maple syrup, if I need to maintain weight I do the same.
Here are the meals/snacks I will be choosing from this week:
Breakfasts:
Trim Healthy Mama Chocolate Zucchini Protein Muffins (S)
Bulletproof Pumpkin Spice Latte (S)
Momma’s Favorite Breakfast (S)
Cocoa Nuts {Grain Free Cocoa Wheats} (S)
Pancakes of some sort (E)
An Eggwhite Scramble or Quiche (E or Fuel Pull depending on veggies)
Lunches:
Salads with lots of protein. To make it an E meal- low fat protein with sweet potato on the side or beans on the salad, for an S salad protein of any kind with lots of healthy fats- olive oil dressing, avocado, nuts, hardboiled eggs, etc.
Walleye Ceviche (FP)
Possibly some sort of eggs if it is a busier day (S)
Smoothies (S)
Dinners:
Lean protein- like venison or chicken- with a sweet potato and veggies. (E)
Fattier protein- beef or dark meat of chicken- with veggies. (S)
Snacks/Desserts
A square of Dark Chocolate with 12-15 nuts (S)
Almond Joy Cookie Bites (S) To make these THM friendly omit the honey and use stevia to taste in the cookie part. Use dark chocolate for the chocolate coating (or skinny chocolate).
Grain Free No Bake Cookies (Crossover – because of the honey which I have no idea how to substitute. THM does allow honey and maple syrup use occasionally on plan, especially for pregnant and nursing mommas, and this is how I will be using that exception this week ๐ )
Have you heard of Trim Healthy Mama?
Do you have any questions that I didn’t answer with this post?
What would be the hardest part of switching to this plan for you?

ah, trying to stay away from sugar for me….. ๐

This is so interesting!! I’ve never heard of this resource/book but I think I need to add it to my library… kudos to you for sticking with a meal plan and making it work for your pregnancy!!!!

I haven’t heard of this book. We eat pretty healthy (similarly to what you mention the book details), so I would be curious to see the recipes. It would be difficult to give up sugar entirely though!

I’ve never heard of this eating plan before. I would have to work pretty hard to eliminate sugar from my diet completely. I gave up soda, but I drink a lot of ice tea, and need to sweeten it with some sort of sweetener. I could definitely use Stevia for that, though. Thanks for sharing!

Props to you for braving it with no sugar! That would be tough for me.

I love THM! It’s so awesome! I eat mostly THM for breakfast and lunch but we tend to do more paleo for dinner. Great meal plan and overview. I love smoothies. One of my favorites are my cheesecake smoothies they are an S. So good and satisfying.

THM and Paleo seem to work really well together. I know lots of people combine the two and have awesome stories to tell about how it has helped them gain control over so many things like thyroid issues, PCOS, constant yeast issues and more!
A cheesecake smoothie sounds AMAZING!!
Melissa (Wading Through Motherhood) says
This seems simple enough! I don’t like diets but this is more of a way of life.
Rebekah says
Definitely a way of life! It has helped me with so many things! I’m able to keep my hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s under control with this and with a homeopathic support rather than needing a script, I don’t have breakouts any more, better digestion and no more yeast infections! When I start getting into to much sugar I can tell right away because of mood swings and my yeast rash comes back.

Good luck! I hadn’t heard of this plan before, but it looks simple and terrifying at the same time. I guess that means I’d have to actually watch what I am eating. I am a healthy weight, but I can definitely curb the snacking. I’ll have to look into her program to give me a jump-start on what foods are healthy and what needs to be removed from the pantry.

This sounds like lots of smart advice. I love lean protein with a baked sweet potato and veggies. But it’s so hard to give up all easy carbs. I know it is better for me when I do.
Rebekah says
I seriously love THM! I don’t follow it super strictly right now, I probably follow it 90% of the time, but I stick to it really strictly while pregnant, it makes my pregnancies so much easier!
It is such an easy thing once you get the hang of it. Keeping carbs and fats separate seems hard for a bit, but it gets easier over time, and soon you are doing it without even thinking about it. ๐
Lauren says
This would be so hard for me because I don’t like eliminating anything all together :/. But our pastors wife follows this loosely and has loved it so maybe I should look more into it!
Rebekah says
I’m not super strict with it right now either, but I do stick to it when I am having a thyroid flare up or pregnant. It makes my pregnancies so much easier!! I didn’t do it with my first but did with the younger two, the pregnancies were seriously a night and day difference. It is super easy if you work your way into it. I think the hardest thing for me was probably giving up the sugar, but once I was able to do that, it was easy breezy. ๐

I have a couple of friends that are doing this and just love it. They have a ‘tea’ (?) that they are always carrying. It looks a little scary, but they insist it’s delicious! I checked out the strawberry-peanut butter ‘ice cream’ and it looks fabulous..pinning that!
Rebekah says
OOHhhh, the Shrinker, or Good Girl Moonshine? I love them both!! I usually go through spurts in carrying them around. ๐ For a while you won’t see me without and then I don’t have them for a couple of months. ๐ I hope you like the ice cream!! ๐
Abbey says
I love your sample meal plan! That is so helpful! My sister-in-law has been doing this and she’s been feeling a lot better than before! ๐
Rebekah says
Glad you found it helpful, Abby!! There are so many amazing stories from those following THM, I love reading them all!
