If you have been here a while, or if you know me in real life, you know that I like to get rid of things.ย I like to think we are half-minimalist. ๐
I don’t think a completely minimalist lifestyle would work well for us at this point, but I have cut our wardrobes down a lot and gotten rid of a lot of toys that I didn’t like {just being honest :)} or the boys didn’t play with.

We have also gone through our bookcases and gotten rid of forgettable books- ones we read once and never care to again, ones that don’t capture my attention until 5 chapters in, ones the boys are squirming to get down and play while I read, or ones that don’t apply to our lives anymore.
We are becoming more and more minimalist but here are some children's books we won't be getting rid of Click To Tweet
Here are 8 books we WON’T get rid of.
Ever.
1. The Big Red Tractor and the Little Village ~ Francis Chan
This book illustrates the importance of letting the Holy Spirit work in our lives and fill us with God’s power so we can do great things.
2. The Poky Little Puppy ~ Janette Sebring Lowrey
This children’s classic was one of my favorites growing up. I have fond memories of my grandma, who passed in 2010, reading this to my siblings and I. You follow the little puppy through his adventures in the world beyond the gate.
3. Socks for Supper ~ Jack Kent
All the old man and his wife want is cheese and milk for their supper. They don’t have a cow, but their neighbor does. Socks become a trading good, but soon the old woman runs out of yarn….. you’ll have to find the book to see how the story ends. ๐
4. My First Little House Books- Going West ~ adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books
The boys love the illustrations on every page. I love the fact that they are learning history from a true pioneer. We have several of this series, they’re definitely favorites around here.
5. Tacky the Penguin ~ Helen Lester
The importance of being yourself is taught in this book. Tacky is a little different from the other penguins, but in the end his differences save the family from being captured and sold.
6. Goodnight Moon ~ Margaret Wise Brown
Our board book is starting to fall apart. One thing I never noticed before we had our own copy {thanks Aunt Brooke! :)} is that the bunny’s huge bedroom gets darker in each picture ’til you see the moon shining brightly through the window at the end.
7. Alphabet Rescue ~ Audrey and Bruce Wood
This book has firetrucks and heros, what boy wouldn’t love it? We like finding the different letters on each page and finding the “secret” words in the pictures.
8. Guess How Much I Love You ~ Sam McBratney
Yet another classic. What can I say except that I love classics? This is such a sweet bedtime book. My boys and I have motions for each of the bunnies claims to largest love. Their favorite is making the bunny hop. ๐
Other books you probably haven’t read but should:ย

We love Goodnight Moon!
My daughter’s favorites have been:

-Corduroy by Don Freeman
-The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

I’ve heard lots about each of those books but they aren’t ones we have read yet. I’ll have to look for them the next time we are at the library. ๐

We’ve read a couple books on this list, but looks like I have some more to add to our reading lists. Our top favorite kid’s books are Dinosaur Roar, Where’s My Cow? by Terry Pratchett, and Introductory Calculus for Infants (my husband is a physics teacher, haha). We are very minimalist in a lot of ways, but definitely not in books!
Rebekah says
Calculus for Infants? Wow!! That sounds like something I would need to read if I were ever to understand calculus. Math and I don’t get along very well. :-)I love books as well, especially the classics. I want my boys to grow up knowing the great stories and literature that I love.

I love the first two sentences of this post! lol I can soooo relate. I grew up with The Poky Little Puppy and have fond memories of it. ๐ I read Goodnight Moon to my oldest many, MANY times when she was young, so I adore it, too. Thanks for the other recommendations!
I have thought about making a list like this myself – if/when I do the post, I’ll be sure to link back to you! ๐
Rebekah says
Well thanks!! I haven’t been over to see you in a long time, I’m heading over today. ๐

We also have our faves that I like to end with .. he loves “Dinosaur Roar” in fact he calls his dinosaur “roar!”. Goodnight Little Bear. Molly and the night monster – has to be done with all the fluffy toys, Little Rabbit Couldn’t Sleep. He loves his truck book too – opening and closing all the flaps.
Rebekah says
Okay, you are the second to recommend Dinosaur Roar, so we will definitely have to look for that. I should go order it through our library now!
Many of our flap books no longer have all their flaps. We like those too. ๐
Heather says
actually it’s Dinosaur versus Bedtime… but he does roar a lot..

I have soooo many favourites: anything a Robert Munsch, so many of a Eric Carle, Anna Dewdney, Ian Falkner, I’m blanking on some others. Here are Five Favourite Picture Booksthat we love that you don’t necessarily need to follow the text – the pictures elicit enough conversation/ story on their own.
Rebekah says
Cool!! Thanks so much for the list! I’ll have to come check it out. I love the Llama Llama books from Anna. ๐
Kate @ Did That Just Happen? says
No, you can’t get rid of Poky Little Puppy! I have a collection of Little Golden Books that are put away, and a Dr Seuss collection that I’ll never get rid of – they are meant to be passed down!
Rebekah says
I will never get rid of it!! Golden Books remind me of my Grandma. ๐ She had tons of them in a box on her closet floor and we would always go into her room and bring out a stack of at least five books.
Susannah says
Oooo… Thanks for sharing these! I’m going to have to look into some – especially that one by Francis Chan! Two of my favorites are Snuggle Piggy and the Magic Blanket and Least of All.
Rebekah says
I love Francis Chan’s books! I need to pull out mine and reread them. I like Crazy love so much I got the audio book for my husband so he could “read” it too. ๐
Rebekah says
Okay, so I’m trying to find the post where you linked back here, but I can’t find it on the Mom of Three blog…..where is it?
