Seth-boy has become a picky eater. ๐ As a baby he would eat anything that I put in front of him, but since he turned two, he will eat certain things some days and then offer it to him other days and it is not acceptable. I know this is how some kids eat, so I try not to make a big deal of it, if he wants to eat what I make him he can and if not he doesn’t get anything else until the next meal time. Sometimes it can be that he just isn’t hungry at the time we eat and he eats a little later, other times, I know he is hungry and he just decides he doesn’t like that food that day, and he decides to wait until the next meal.
I have one thing that helps, and that is letting Seth help me cook. So as much as possible I try to have him help me. He has a set of sturdy plastic knives he gets to use to chop things and he loves to measure and dump things when we bake. He doesn’t normally help me make breakfast because he is normally a little grumpy but he loves to help make this cereal. His job is chopping bananas. ๐
Raspberry Banana Oat Bran Cereal – serves 2
1 1/2 cups water (nut or rice milk also work)
Heaping 1/2 cup oat bran
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 banana
2-3 Tablespoons Raspberry Jam
Sweetener of your choice. We use powdered stevia extract most times, sometimes we use raw sugar or honey. Any sweetener will work. ๐
Optional; a couple shakes of cinnamon.
Combine first four ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Once it is boiling turn heat down to simmer and cook until thickened, stirring constantly. This takes around 5 minutes to cook.
While this is cooking the toddler can be chopping banana. Large or small pieces, however they want to cut it. ๐
When it is thickened remove from heat and add the raspberry jam and your sweetener of choice to taste. Pour into two bowls. Allow toddler to arrange half the banana into each bowl. Each bowl may or may not get banana, it depends on how well you are watching the toddler while he is doing this.
Devour and have happy bellies.

I’m surprised you’ve got a kid that will eat oat bran! ๐
Rebekah says
Breakfast cereals are surprisingly one thing he will always eat. But not cold cereal, cooked ones like rice, oats, millet, etc.
Thanks for coming by!! ๐

Ohhh! My girl has become picky as well! he does the same thing- some days she loves strawberries some she doesn’t ! Lately it’s with more and more things… I know how you feel ๐
Liga Zervena says
But raspberries, she doesn’t like at all… I love them!! I might try this with different berries!
Rebekah says
It should work with any berry jam. It should work with fresh or frozen berries too. ๐
Growing Up Madison says
Madison loves fruits and bananas are her favorite. We always have to have some banana’s in the house. I might have to try this with her and see if she likes it. Thanks for sharing.
Rebekah says
We love banana’s here too. I like to get a whole bunch (as in pounds, not one bunch, Haha) when they are on a really good sale and then we’ll make muffins and bread to freeze and pull out for quick snacks. I also freeze them whole, peeled, in case Mr Seth decides he is in a smoothie mood.

This looks easy and delicious! Can’t wait to try!

It is! Hope you enjoy it!

I have the hardest time getting my toddler to eat breakfast. He’s great at eating other meals, but not breakfast. I’ll have to try this recipe and see if it helps! Thanks for sharing.

What is with these silly kids and not eating?? ๐ Hope you like it!
Jill @ Called To Be A Mom says
We make a lot of oatmeal style breakfasts around here! I love some just plain with honey and brown sugar
Rebekah says
One things I love about all the different hot cereals is that they are so versatile, endless options! We like honey in ours too!
Tammy Doiel @creativekkids.com says
That age sounds about right! All of my kids went through it around 2, but thankfully they all loved fruit at least.
Rebekah says
Good to know he isn’t the only one! I just figured this stage wouldn’t last more than a couple months, but nope, still going strong in the pickiness a year later!
Carli says
First of all, super cute picture of him! He is like MOM! Not another picture! Haha. Second, I am telling you, it doesn’t get any easier as they get 3 and even 4, but I have found that letting them help cook makes a HUGE difference!
Rebekah says
Thanks!! Overtime I go to make something Seth runs over to help. ๐ He likes to “help” daddy grill to. Seth is a very good grill supervisor. :-p
rochellebarlow says
That sounds good! You’re a good mom to let him help you with so much cooking. I know I ought to, I just can’t ever figure out how to #1 let go of control and #2 make things safe for them. I’m hyper paranoid. The cereal looks pretty yummy, and I know my kids would like it, well, at least my daughters. My sons would think I’d lost my mind. They’re super picky with their breakfast
Rebekah says
Oh goodness, I really struggle with letting go of control as well, sometimes he dumps things in different than I would and it makes me so upset!! I have to remind myself it doesn’t matter how it gets in the bowl, it just needs to get in.

Look at that little guy’s face. He looks like he’s in heaven! lol

Gosh, you do the same with me. My middle son is also a picky eater. Fortunately, he likes cooking and trying new recipe. I also don’t force him eating and let him wait until the next meal. Thanks for sharing.
Rebekah says
These picky boys, I tell you!! ๐ My husband is super picky as well, maybe it is a genetic thing.
adelientandian says
Sometimes they take example maybe.๐
Crystal McClean says
It looks like it’s being enjoyed! We’ll give it a go when I find the bran in our freezer, I’m sure my kids would enjoy it.
Rebekah says
I should get a picture of his face when he doesn’t like something! ๐ Hope your kids like it too!
